MBS vs WLL in Fall Protection Hardware

Understand minimum breaking strength, working load limit and why buyers should not treat them as interchangeable.

Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) is the minimum force at which a component is expected to break under a defined test method. Working Load Limit (WLL) is an allowable working value established using an appropriate safety factor. They are not interchangeable.

Why buyers must separate MBS and WLL

A component marked with an MBS does not automatically have a universal WLL. The usable system value depends on the relevant standard, application, loading direction and manufacturer instructions.

Questions for suppliers

  • Which test method defines the stated strength?
  • Is the value for major axis, minor axis or open gate?
  • How many samples were tested?
  • What was the failure mode?
